The Pen is Mightier than the Sword. This statement is a favourite amongst anyone who is not connected to the military. Taken literally, this would conjure up a ridiculous scenario of an army wielding pens defeating their opponents carrying swords. But most powerful assertions such as these are never meant to be taken literally.

The Pen is indeed mightier than the Sword. Nowadays I might say "The Mouse is mightier than the Sword." Alright some of you who tend to be perfectionists will argue that it is not the mouse but the "keyboard" or the "internet".

With so many stories in the media including books and TV about the upheaval of Government, Idealogy, Crime - the list is unending - brought about by somebody's writings, I am relieved from boring you with any examples here. However, I wish to mention one which I feel is so appropriate - The Watergate Affair which brought about Richard Nixon's exit from office. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein from The Washington Post made political history in the USA in 1973. There are of course so many other cases both significant and otherwise.

The Goose, one of my "Animal" friends - non-literally -, sent me an article through e-mail which described the plight of the real natives - Sons of the Land if you will - of Sarawak and Sabah. It was related in the form of a true story of a young Penan mother who eventually succumbed to Cancer not only because of poverty but because of neglect by the Government whose officials were too busy ensuring re-election and lining their own pockets. I found it very moving. For the whole story please go to :- http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/102388

The writer, in my opinion, has done an excellent job. I hope his article will find it's way to a larger, more influential site where the whole world's attention can be drawn to it. Then the politicians of Sarawak will be shamed into action, to improving the quality of life for their indigenous citizens and also to stop clearing the precious rain forests to make way for Dams and Hydro-Electric Power.

Then his pen will have been mightier than the sword........well mouse or internet if you insist !
